Walking in Central (North) Corfu

Walking in Central (North) Corfu
From the flat Ropa Plain to the rugged west coast hills, the Central Corfu (North) walking area encompasses a huge range of landscapes. Though urban sprawl encroaches year by year on the countryside around Corfu Town, out of the suburbs much of the region remains rural, whether in the vicinity of the many picturesque village or away from habitation. In the Central Corfu (North) region, you walk to mountaintops and along high ridges, and in the lowlands through pastures alongside rivers and streams. And throughout the region you wander amongst the endless olive groves which blanket the rolling hills.

Central (North) Corfu
The Central Corfu walking region extends from the edge of the Pantokrator Massif to its southern border at the National Pelekas Highway (more or less a line drawn westwards from Corfu Town). Its main geographical features are the Felekas Plain (south of Skripero), the Temploni Hills, the Ropa Plain and the West Coast Hills. It also takes in Corfu Town. Some of the resorts and villages close to the area covered by this guide are Kontokali, Gouvia, Dassia, Ipsos, Korakiana, Paleokastritsa, Giannades, Agios Ioannis, Vatos/Myrtiotissa, Temploni, Poulades, Pelekas and Ermones.

Links to other Corfu Walks areas
The Corfu Trail connects the Central Corfu (North) region with the Paleokastritsa walking area to the north and in the other direction, between Vatos and Pelekas, to the Central Corfu (South) area. In the future, new walks not yet in this guide will link the Central Corfu (North) Network with Spartillas and thence (by way of the Corfu Trail) with all of North & North East Corfu.

Maps
Unfortunately, graphics greatly increase the size of a pdf file in this format, and their inclusion would prevent dispatch by email of the document. As a result, this book does not contain maps. The best map of Corfu is Freytag and Berndt's 1:50,000 edition, though it is not 100% accurate, and it does not depict most footpaths.
